We recommend having your piano tuned at least once a year to maintain it's pitch and tone. Twice a year is the reccommendation of piano manufacturers, and is the best way to keep your piano sounding the best it can.
A piano that hasn't been tuned for a few years will always be out of tune, certainly, but in many cases, the pitch of the piano will have changed too, usually to the flat side. This is mostly due to the different seasons of the year changing both temperature and humidity levels throughout the year.
This has the effect of making both the wooden and metal materials used to construct the piano change very slighly in dimensions. Although they don't move very much at all, they will cause the tension of the piano strings to alter, thereby making the piano out of tune. The longer it is left, the worse it will get.
The problem is, putting a piano in tune when moving the strings too far means that the piano will not be in a stable condition, and will go out of tune again extremely quickly, usually by the same or next day. It will only stay in tune if the pitch is roughly where it should be, which is the main reason to have a piano tuned at least once a year.
The piano can usually still be brough back up to pitch, but will most probably need to be put roughly in tune first, and allowed to stabilize, before it can be properly fine tuned.
This process is known as a 'pitch raise and fine tune', and due to the extra time involved, it does cost more than a normal tuning.
Yes, we are able to do most maintenence repairs, such as replacing strings, fixing sticky notes etc., but unfortunately don't have the premises or resources to offer major repairs, although our tuner is usually able to offer experienced advice on work that may be needed, and can often put you in touch with a workshop based piano restorer to make the more major repairs.
We are currently not able to offer piano removals, due to a lack of manpower, but have a long established arrangement with a local piano removals team who we can put you in touch with, and they specialize in removals, so should be able to help you.
